Introducing Our Premium Desserts
Four delectable rice cake balls smothered in one of three sweet sauces—walnut, black sesame, and sweet azuki bean—make our new Premium Desserts the perfect treats for any occasion. As with all of our cakes, the desserts are made with gluten-free sweet rice flour and contain no artificial preservatives—yet they taste as fresh as when they were made for up to 5 days in the fridge. We’re very proud of these confections—and we bet you’ll love them, too.
The Story of Mebukiya and the Birth of Premium Desserts

Mebukiya started life in 1954 as a grain mill in the city of Hanamaki in Iwate, northern Japan. Soon, we were making traditional cakes from the sweet rice flour we produced, allowing us to promote the local industry—and also the joy of eating freshly made, gluten-free rice cakes that are free of preservatives. Over the years, we constantly explored new ways to deliver this experience to as many people as possible: selling our cakes at retailers, researching frozen food technologies, and setting up a food stand in Morioka Train Station. Using everything we learned, we’ve developed what we consider to be our greatest creation yet: Premium Desserts.

About Mebukiya

Mebukiya was founded in 1954. Today, we are based in the city of Hanamaki in Iwate, northern Japan. We manufacture a wide range of gluten-free Japanese rice cakes—which use no preservatives and taste fresh for several days—as well as different types of rice flours. Our lineup includes both popular classics and modern twists on traditional recipes.
In Japanese, our name means “the place where new shoots sprout.” While the name is a reference to the cycle of good rice harvests that allow us to make our products, it also refers to our belief that by coming up with new products in every new era, we can keep Japan’s cake-making traditions alive for generations to come.
In March 2024, we set up a food stand inside Morioka Train Station. The stand has proven a hit with young people—and even with tourists coming from overseas.
In recent years, we’ve been focusing on developing items that are more in line with contemporary tastes, such as our Premium Desserts line.
